Why shop at an independent bookstore instead of Amazon?
At La Naranjah we strongly belive in being a bookstore de barrio. That means knowing our neighbors, engaging with our local community, and creating a space that welcomes connection and conversation. While you may be able to get your book faster through Amazon, you miss out on the opportunity to be a part of a community. And that looks like monthly book clubs, recommendations from the bookseller who remembers what you read last month, petting any dogs who come to visit the shop, pints at the bar across the street after book events etc. When you buy from an independent bookstore, you're supporting more than a place that sells books. You're helping create a space where stories, languages, and community come together.
What makes a great bookstore?
For us, a great bookshop is one that feels like home. A space where we can lose track of time browsing the shelves and discover a book we’ve never heard of before. We love genuine recommendations and spontaneous conversations that make us feel like part of the bookshop community. Most importantly, it’s a place where every type of reader is valued and celebrated.
Do you have children’s books?
We have a carefully curated selection of children's books in both English and Spanish, with a special focus on English titles. We also host a monthly English storytime for little readers. If you're looking for a particular book, we're always happy to special order it.
How do I choose the right books for my child's age?
We don't organize our children's books by age, because every child is different. Rather than focusing on age recommendations, we help children find books they're genuinely excited to read, even if that's the 17th book in a favorite series. We'll ask about what they love right now, what they're curious about, and how they like to engage with stories, then recommend books that fit their interests and where they are in their reading journey.
This is Seville, so why a bookshop with half the books in English?
Librería La Naranjah is a home for multiple languages, much like Sevilla itself. Our city has always been shaped by different cultures, languages, and stories. Today, that includes people who have made Sevilla their home, students from around the world, visitors passing through, and local readers who love discovering books in other languages. A bookshop with books in both English and Spanish creates more opportunities for sharing stories, discovering new perspectives, and connecting with different cultures. And, it was the natural next step for a guiri married to a sevillano who learned how to be a bookseller in Spain.
I’ve never read a book in English/Spanish, but I want to try. Where do I start?
You've come to the right place! People often think they should start with the classics when reading in a second language for the first time, but our first question is always:What do you usually read?Or even,What do you like to watch? What kinds of stories resonate with you? If you love contemporary nonfiction or romance, there's no reason you need to start withOne Hundred Years of SolitudeorMoby-Dick. As bilingual booksellers, we have a few tricks up our sleeve, whether that's recommending a well-written YA novel with slightly more accessible prose or suggesting a book (or even a film) you already know and love, so you can focus on enjoying the language instead of constantly trying to figure out what's happening. When you come in to the shop, we’ll be happy to give you a few recommendations that best fit your preferences and level.
